HCA Healthcare was created through the vision of founders Dr. Thomas F. Frist, Sr., Mr. Jack Massey and Dr. Thomas “Tommy” Frist, Jr., and 50 years later, HCA is a learning healthcare system that continues to invent and develop systems to improve patient care, in large part due to the innovative ideas of employees. The HCA Innovators Award, established in 2010, continues the tradition of recognizing innovative thinkers whose ideas improve patient quality, service or the efficiency of operations.
The recipient of this year’s HCA Innovators Award at LCMC is: Marsee Shaffer, RN, a nurse on the 3rd Floor ICU unit. . Marsee’s submission was in the Quality and Safety category with an initiative focused on efficiency and performance improvement. Her innovation or idea, was to make SCD pumps more easily accessible. As a nurse, she believed it would be more beneficial to have SCD pumps built into every hospital bed. This would save the staff from spending hours relocating and reallocating pumps, and it could be done right away instead of postponing placement due to the inefficiency of searching for a pump.
